Paxos, seven miles long
and three miles wide, may be the smallest of the Ionian
Islands but is undoubtedly the most picturesque. Lying just
7 nautical miles off the southern end of Corfu and 12
nautical miles from the mainland casts a spell on you from
the very moment you step foot on it.
The olive trees and the dark groves of cypresses that cover
the island, the beaches, the crystal clear waters are all
unique.
Paxos is not "built-up". You will not find luxury
hotels and posh restaurants. Its charm lies in the small, in
formal villages, the friendliness of its people, the
unspoilt surroundings, the narrow streets and the small
shops.
A host of tavernas offer local dishes, including moussaka,
pastitsio, souvlaki, sofrito, stuffed tomatoes and peppers,
fish of all kinds, lobster and good chilled wine. Just one
mile off the southern tip of Paxos lies Antipaxos, a little
vineyard island (only 3 square kilometers). The journey from
the port of Gaios to Antipaxos by express boat takes about
10 minutes. Its irresistible beaches have the fines san
imaginable and the water is un unbelievable brilliant
turqoise. |
